Gangapuram Kishan Reddy currently serves as the Union Minister for Coal (the 25th Minister to hold this portfolio) and Mines (the 45th Minister). Representing the Secunderabad Parliamentary constituency in the Lok Sabha, he is a prominent leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Telangana. Previously, he served as the Union Minister for Tourism, Culture, and Development of the North Eastern Region from 2021 to 2024. Similarly, he served as the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs from 2019 to 2021. Prior to his parliamentary career, he was elected as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from the Amberpet constituency on a BJP ticket on three occasions. He also served as the President of the Telangana BJP.
He was born on June 15, 1960, in Timmapur, Ranga Reddy district. His father’s name is Swamy Reddy, and his mother’s name is Andallamma. Kishan Reddy is married to Kavya Reddy; the couple has one son and one daughter. He completed a Diploma in Tool Design course from CITD. He has been actively involved in politics since his student days, beginning in 1977. Since the inception of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980, he has served as a full-time member, eventually rising to the rank of a Union Minister today. From 1982 to 2001, he held various positions within the Bharatiya Janata Party Yuva Morcha (BJYM). During the years 2001–02, he served as the Treasurer, Official Spokesperson, and In-charge of the State BJP Headquarters for Andhra Pradesh. From 2002 to 2005, he served as the National President of the BJYM. He represented the Himayatnagar constituency in the Legislative Assembly in 2004, and the Amberpet constituency in 2009 and 2014. Between 2010 and 2014, he was unanimously elected as the President of the BJP for the united state of Andhra Pradesh, and subsequently, following the formation of Telangana state, he was again elected as the BJP President. In the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he achieved victory with a massive majority from the Secunderabad constituency. On January 19, 2012, he undertook a Padayatra (foot march) spanning 3,500 kilometers, titled the “Telangana Poru Yatra.” His foot march traversed a total of 986 villages and 88 Assembly constituencies. He undertook this struggle-march with the specific objective of achieving the formation of a separate Telangana state. It is noteworthy that this march was flagged off by Nitin Gadkari.
Currently serving as the Union Minister for Coal and Mines, he is taking several pivotal steps forward. He is implementing measures to ensure the transparent auction of lithium mines—a resource that has become critically important to the nation’s economy. Furthermore, he urged the states to extensively utilize drones and artificial intelligence within the mining sector. He is striving to achieve self-reliance in energy resources by boosting domestic coal production and reducing dependence on foreign imports. While serving as a Union Minister, he focused special attention on the modernization of the Secunderabad Railway Station and the development projects for AIIMS in Bibinagar.
In his dual capacity as a Union Minister and the Member of Parliament for Secunderabad, he undertook several key initiatives. Development works for the Secunderabad Railway Station were initiated with an outlay of ₹700 crore; upon completion, the station is set to feature amenities comparable to those found in airports. To alleviate traffic congestion within his constituency, funds have been sanctioned for the construction of railway overbridges (ROBs)—such as the one at Chiralagadda—and various underpasses. He played a pivotal role in securing approval from the Central Government for the construction of the Regional Ring Road (RRR), a project regarded as a crowning jewel for the state of Telangana. Additionally, he is actively working towards the modernization of lakes and water bodies across the twin cities under various Central Government schemes.
Under the ‘PRASAD’ scheme, funds were allocated for the development of pilgrimage sites in Telangana, such as the Ramappa Temple and Bhadrachalam. His efforts were instrumental in securing UNESCO recognition for the Ramappa Temple. Currently, in his capacity as the Minister for Mines, he is providing the necessary impetus for the extraction of lithium. If this mineral is found in abundance, the nation can achieve self-reliance in the electric vehicle sector. He is also actively encouraging start-ups that are pioneering new innovations within the mining and coal sectors. To this end, substantial assistance is being provided to them in the form of grants. Plans are being formulated not only to boost state government revenues through the auction of coal mines but also to generate employment opportunities for thousands of people.
On behalf of the Central Government, Kishan Reddy has initiated numerous projects aimed at developing civic infrastructure within the Secunderabad Cantonment area and fostering the growth of Hyderabad’s IT sector. Kishan Reddy successfully secured approval from the Union Ministry of Defence, allowing the land compensation funds provided by the State Government for the construction of elevated corridors (amounting to approximately ₹303.62 crores) to be utilized directly by the Cantonment Board (SCB) for civic works. From these funds, ₹128 crores are currently being utilized to construct an underground drainage system, as well as stormwater drains at Patny and Rasoolpura. The Central Government has issued a notification regarding the renovation of internal roads within the Cantonment limits and the process of integrating the Cantonment area into the GHMC. This initiative is expected to lead to further improvements in civic amenities. A proposal for an additional special allocation of ₹18 crores for basic infrastructure development is currently under review by the Union Ministry of Defence.
A Model ITI (Industrial Training Institute) center has been established in Mallepally at a cost of ₹10 crore to train the youth in alignment with the requirements of the IT industry. Through the ‘Vikasit Bharat Entrepreneurs Network,’ training and financial assistance are being provided to encourage both rural and urban youth to launch IT startups. The incentives and infrastructure facilities provided by the Central Government played a pivotal role in achieving export revenues of approximately ₹1.45 lakh crore during the last financial year through the ‘Software Technology Parks of India’ (STPI) in Hyderabad. Kishan Reddy urged IT companies to aim for global leadership in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and product innovation, ensuring that the IT industry is not confined solely to coding. Kishan Reddy further stated that the three high-speed corridors originating from Hyderabad—connecting to Pune, Bengaluru, and Chennai—would provide a significant boost to the IT and Pharma sectors.
