HYDERABAD, NETIDHATHRI :

Bandi Sanjay Kumar, who currently serves as the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, was born on July 11, 1971. His parents are Narsaiah and Shakuntala. He completed his secondary education in 1986 at Sri Saraswathi Shishumandir in Karimnagar. At the age of 12, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and served as an active volunteer. Subsequently, he entered student politics through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). In this capacity, he served as the Karimnagar Town President and later as a member of the State Executive Committee. Furthermore, he held various positions including Town Secretary, Town President, National Secretary for Kerala, and In-charge for Tamil Nadu. In 1996, he traveled across the country for 35 days during the “Surat Rath Yatra” led by senior BJP leader L.K. Advani. In 2005, Bandi Sanjay Kumar was elected as the Corporator for the 48th Division of Karimnagar. He continued to serve as a Corporator from that time until his victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. However, despite contesting as an MLA candidate for the Karimnagar constituency in the 2014 and 2018 Assembly elections, he was defeated by BRS leader Gangula Kamalakar. In 2025, when five farmers in Gambhiraopet, Rajanna Sircilla district, were stranded in the floodwaters of the Manair River, he played a pivotal role in their rescue by contacting Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and arranging for helicopters to be deployed. In April 2023, the police filed a case against Bandi Sanjay regarding the leakage of 10th-grade examination question papers and subsequently sent him to jail. However, in November 2025, the Telangana High Court delivered a verdict stating that he had no involvement whatsoever in the case. He has been representing the Karimnagar constituency since 2019. He served as the President of the Telangana State BJP from March 11, 2020, to July 4, 2023. He is currently a Board Member of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Bibinagar. On March 29, 2023, the BJP High Command appointed him as a National General Secretary of the party.

Currently, if anyone were to ask who the “firebrand leader” of the BJP in Telangana is, the immediate answer would undoubtedly be Bandi Sanjay. He possesses the unique ability to relentlessly corner his political opponents by leveling sensational allegations against them. He is a capable leader who can penetrate deep into areas where his opponents hold a strong foothold and successfully sway voters to his side. In the recent Karimnagar Corporation elections, the credit for securing ‘Kashmirgadda’—an area renowned for being a stronghold of the AIMIM—for the BJP goes entirely to Bandi Sanjay! Having begun his career as an RSS/BJP activist, Bandi Sanjay was elected as a Municipal Corporator in Karimnagar on three occasions. The distinction of effectively mobilizing party cadres—drawing upon his background within the RSS and BJP—and leading the party to decisively defeat formidable rivals like the BRS and Congress parties belongs solely to Bandi Sanjay. The fact that the BJP managed to capture 30 out of the 66 seats in the Karimnagar Corporation stands as a testament to Bandi Sanjay’s achievements. Furthermore, it was his exceptional leadership prowess that enabled the party to secure a majority with the support of independent candidates, thereby hoisting the saffron flag over the Karimnagar Corporation for the very first time!

Indeed, during his tenure as the BJP State President, Bandi Sanjay demonstrated his formidable leadership capabilities by successfully boosting the party’s vote share from a mere 7% to an impressive 33%. Bandi Sanjay’s leadership style is distinct from that of other leaders; his primary strategy involves delivering spirited speeches that captivate the masses, while consistently prioritizing and rewarding those who have remained loyal to the party since its inception. The primary reason why nearly 80% of the tickets in the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation elections were allotted to long-serving party loyalists was the initiative taken by Bandi Sanjay.

Following Bandi Sanjay, G. Kishan Reddy served as the State Party President, a role currently held by N. Ramchander Rao. In fact, the decision by the party high command to remove Bandi Sanjay from the post of Party President is widely regarded as a historic blunder. It must be acknowledged that his aggressive style of functioning, in a sense, gave the party significant momentum. It was under his guidance—and with the current State Party President, N. Ramchander Rao, working alongside him—that party candidates achieved victory in 30 divisions in Karimnagar for the very first time. Internally, many party leaders share the sentiment that had he remained the Party President during the 2023 Assembly elections, the party’s fortunes would have been vastly different. A sensation was created at the time when Vijayashanti—a film star who was then a member of the BJP—alleged on one occasion that Bandi Sanjay was removed from the Party Presidency as part of a secret pact struck with the BRS. The underlying implication of her remarks was that this action was taken precisely because Bandi Sanjay had become a source of discomfort to the ruling BRS party.

There is a prevailing opinion that the “firebrand” Bandi Sanjay is the only leader capable of effectively countering the aggressive style of functioning exhibited by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. The party cadre believes that the *padayatra* (foot march) previously organized by Bandi Sanjay—under the banner of the “Praja Sangrama Yatra”—shook the then-ruling BRS government, and that a similar march is now essential to deal a blow to the Congress party. There is a clear consensus among local leaders that the momentum—which had suddenly cooled down following his removal from office prior to the 2023 Assembly elections—has been reignited by this *Praja Sangrama Yatra*. Furthermore, a unanimous opinion emerging among them is that Bandi Sanjay is the only individual fully capable of sustaining this momentum. Meanwhile, the party high command is acting strategically to ensure Bandi Sanjay continues to exert influence on state politics; to this end, they have retained him as a National General Secretary in addition to his role as a Union Minister. Currently, acting in accordance with the high command’s directives, he is extending his full support and cooperation to the State President, N. Ramchander Rao. There is another significant point worth recalling here: although the party secured a 14% increase in vote share in the 2023 Assembly elections compared to previous polls, it managed to win only eight Assembly seats. Leaders across various levels of the party hold the unequivocal opinion that had Bandi Sanjay—who is adept at effectively leading “street-level” agitations—been at the helm, the trajectory of the party’s growth would have been vastly different.

It is noteworthy that, since 2018, the BJP has been recording a consistent and systematic growth trajectory within the state. For instance, while the party’s vote share in the state stood at 7.1% during the 2018 Assembly elections, it is remarkable that this figure nearly doubled—rising to 13.9%—by the time of the 2023 Assembly elections. Concurrently, the party’s tally in the Assembly surged from a mere single seat to an impressive eight seats. Furthermore, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party secured 8 out of the total 17 parliamentary seats in the state. While the vote share in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections stood at 19.5%, it nearly doubled to 35.1% by 2024. Yet, the very party that demonstrated such remarkable progress between these two elections delivered a dismal performance in the 2026 local elections, securing a mere 14% of the votes. This implies a loss of 21% of its vote share compared to the previous Lok Sabha elections. It is noteworthy that while the party won 330wards with approximately 13% of the vote in the 2020 local elections, it currently managed to win only 336 wards despite securing 14% of the vote. It is an undeniable truth that had the growth trajectory witnessed in 2024 continued, the party would have won more than double the number of wards in these elections. Furthermore, the aforementioned analysis suggests that such an outcome would have been possible only had Bandi Sanjay’s characteristic assertiveness been at play.

The prevailing sentiment within the party is that Bandi Sanjay would have been able to effectively counter Revanth’s aggressive approach; consequently, he could have transformed these municipal elections into a referendum on the Congress administration and successfully thwarted Congress victories in as many as 70 municipalities. Moreover, one analysis suggests that Bandi Sanjay would have been instrumental in significantly diminishing Congress’s influence. Indeed, Bandi Sanjay’s style of political engagement—characterized by its street-fighting spirit—is in no way inferior to that adopted by Revanth Reddy. His recent act of directly challenging Chief Minister Revanth Reddy regarding Telangana’s development and the allocation of Central Government funds has positioned him at the forefront of opposition leaders. Not only does he project himself as a prominent BC (Backward Classes) leader, but he also holds the distinction of directly challenging both the Congress and BRS parties—daring them to bring forward BC leaders of their own, if they have the mettle to do so. He cornered both the Congress and BRS by declaring that if the BJP comes to power, it would appoint a BC leader (representing the 57% BC population) as the Chief Minister. Considering these factors, a consensus is emerging among the majority of leaders that Bandi Sanjay is the only individual capable of standing toe-to-toe with Revanth in the upcoming Assembly elections. He has already transformed the North Telangana districts—specifically Karimnagar, Nizamabad, and Adilabad—into powerhouses for the party. However, the party remains relatively weak in South and rural Telangana; in fact, it has yet to open its account in 43 municipalities across these regions. The BRS currently holds a vote share of 28.7% in these areas. The primary reason for this resurgence is that a significant number of votes—which had previously gone to the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections—have now shifted back into the BRS’s fold. Under Bandi Sanjay’s leadership, the BJP has now pushed the BRS to the background in most urban corporations, securing the second position for itself. Nevertheless, it is noteworthy that across the state—specifically in rural and municipal areas—the BRS continues to maintain its strength and retains the second position. There is absolutely no doubt that Bandi Sanjay is the only leader capable of bridging this gap.
